For many years BlabberNet has used Unreal IRCD and IRC Services to serve its IRC needs. While this all still works fine, IRC Services development has ceased and will soon loose security support too. Unreal IRCD is still well supported, but InspIRCD has made it a bit dated. BlabberNet is currently in a position of having a very small user base, so major upgrades and changes would presumably be ideal at this time.
The plan is to migrate the network to InspIRCD 2.0 and Atheme Services 5.1 on 1 July 2010. IRC announcements will be made closer to the time to keep everyone updated. All nickname and channel registration data has already been converted to Atheme's format and a test instance is already online for anyone who wants to test the new IRCD and Services package. Please point your IRC client at 196.26.208.160, port 6667, if you want to experiment. Any nickname/channel changes you make there will be lost when the data conversion is redone on the 1st.
Some things have changed, a lot has remained the same. Here's a brief list of the changes:
See you on the new BlabberNet soon!
